Cocos (Keeling) Islands 400 Years
Home > 2009 Issue Summary > Cocos (Keeling) Islands 400 Years

2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the first European sighting of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands by Captain William Keeling in 1609. The four stamps show significant events in the history of the islands.

Issue Information
This is the least complicated issue of 2009, and it is pleasing to see the return of 35 mm square stamps. Thematic collectors will be particularly interested in the second 55c stamp which celebrates Charles Darwin's visit in 1836. 2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin's birth, and this Australia Post's only contribution to the anniversary.
